Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been practiced for thousands of years in China and the Far East but has only relatively recently become popular in Ireland. It is the principal form of medical care used by a large proportion of the world's population. Acupuncture is part of an ancient and sophisticated form of medical treatment which originated in China over 2,000 years ago. It has been steadily increasing in use throughout the world.

TCM, through the use of acupuncture and other classical medical therapies, aims to establish energetic harmony in the whole person and thereby not only treat illness but also promote active health and vitality. Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely fine pre-sterilized stainless steel needles at predetermined points on the body to restore internal health. In the hands of a professional practitioner it is entirely safe and free from any harmful side-effects. Acupuncture can be used alone or combined with other forms of TCM such as herbal medicine, dietary therapy, lifestyle advice and moxibustion (a form of heat treatment).

The initial consultation lasts around one hour. The precise nature of the disharmony is determined using techniques such as "Asking Diagnosis" and thorough examination of the tongue and the pulse. Once a clear picture of the problem has been ascertained, the most effective acupuncture points are selected which are then used to reinforce and stimulate the body's internal strength to cure itself. Subsequent treatment sessions typically last half an hour. Practitioners usually see clients once a week or once a fortnight.

One of the most outstanding features of Traditional Chinese Medicine is that it can tailor the treatment to fit the complaint. It is also compatible with other systems of medicine, including Western medicine. From its earliest days, it has emphasised the promotion of positive health and has not restricted itself merely to the negation of ill health. The aim is not just to make you healthy but to make you vibrantly healthy and invigorated. The scope and range of ailments amenable to TCM care is enormous and all ages can be catered for, from the tiny infant to the elderly. Some of the most common complaints seen in the acupuncture clinic are:

  • Addictions - Anxiety - Arthritis - Asthma - Back pain

Muscular and Joint Pain - Depression - Grief - Low Self-esteem

Eczema - Digestive disorders - Insomnia - Fatigue - Oedema

Menstrual disorders - Menopause - Prostate problems - Sports injuries

Tinnitus Headaches Stress - Panic attacks - Circulatory problems

Urinary disorders - Speech Defects - Hypertension – Prolapse

This is by no means an exhaustive list: Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine can focus on physical, psychological, emotional or even spiritual disorders.

A TCM consultation may be a useful adjunct to your spa stay, and give you a perspective in which to approach your visit.
