Nutrition Philosophy
Temple Country Retreat & Spa aims to provide foods and meals which adhere to current healthy eating guidelines as recommended by the Department of Health and government agencies. Our menus are based on guidelines which reinforce the health messages of low fat, low salt, high fibre and low glycaemic index (GI).
Our menus and dietary recommendations are based on the most current scientific research and focus on the provision of optimum nutrition for guests' individual needs.
Our recipes and meal plans are based on a healthy balance of whole foods and natural ingredients which include:
Wholegrains : Granary, wholegrain and wholemeal breads, cereals such as oats, barley, rye, brown/wholegrain rice. Provide soluble fibre, are rich in B group vitamins and are low GI.
Potatoes and tubers : Including sweet potatoes and other tubers with the skin. All provide complex carbohydrates are low GI and high in fibre.
Legumes : Including beans and peas; lentils, chickpeas, soya beans and tofu. Good sources of low fat protein, high fibre and rich in antioxidants and healthy phyto-oestrogens.
Vegetables and fruit : A variety of colourful fresh fruits and vegetables - including berries and cruciferous vegetables. Along with a variety of both fruit and vegetable smoothies. Fruit and vegetables provide a plethora of vitamin, minerals and complex carbohydrates, as well as antioxidants and healthy plant (phyto) chemicals.
Lean Poultry : Including turkey, chicken and lean game - without the skin. Provide protein, vitamin and minerals but little saturated fat.
Red meats : Lean red meats provide minerals such as iron and vitamins but limit saturated fats.
Seafood : Including healthy oily fish such as mackerel, tuna, sardines and salmon - which are high in protective omega-3 oils and protein. Lean white fish are also provided.
Teas : A variety of teas are provided with emphasis on green teas with their high antioxidant content.
Good fats : including nuts, seeds, olives, avocados and oils - olive oil, canola oil. These fats sources are used to replace saturated and hydrogenated fats in quantities that fall within recommended fat and calorie limits.
Carbohydrates : Our recipes emphasize complex carbohydrates from wholegrains, whole starchy vegetable and fruits. We aim to limit refined "sugary" carbohydrates. Our meals are low glycemic index and aim to stabilise blood glucose levels, helping to prevent overeating and consequent weight gain.
Protein : The use of lean meats, fish, beans and lentils provide healthy dietary sources of protein but are low in saturated fats.
Sodium : We aim to limit sodium intake as much as is possible. Instead we strive to season our foods with herbs and spices which research has shown contain high levels of antioxidant and often have antibacterial or antifungal properties.
