Stress & Resilience
Stress is a necessary stimulus for actions we might not otherwise do, and responding to stress is a normal part of everyday functioning. (When the resolution is clear, there is a clear response. Resources are mobilised and directed towards the desired outcome, the effort is put in and the result achieved. Following which there is rest.)
Stress becomes distress if the stimulus is overwhelming in magnitude or of prolonged duration, if there is inadequate time to rest, if we are inadequately resourced, or if there is ambiguity and we are confused in how to respond. Ambiguity in the interpretation and response to stress is its most insidious form, and the most widespread.
The lack of evenly balanced periods of effort and rest, and the lack of clear formation and execution of intentions, creates ambiguity for the body-mind, predisposing both to degenerative illness.
In the words of the Mayo Clinic,
The long-term activation of the stress-response system and the subsequent overexposure to cortisol and other stress hormones can disrupt almost all your body's processes, increasing your risk of obesity, insomnia, digestive problems, heart disease, depression, memory impairment, physical illnesses and other complications.
The greatest challenge to health today is in maintaining body-mind cohesion. The body is no longer called upon to perform in the physical manner for which it evolved, and the mind can no longer resolve a problem by mobilising the physical resources. The minds objectives are not readily interpreted by the body, nor is the body's usefulness readily perceived by the mind. Meditative style practices, through which we become more attuned to what beats below our surface, and greater sensitivity to the body-mind and its needs, are the key to the resolution of mind-body distress.
The spa will assist in maintaining physical and mental health by supporting you to develop a stress resilient lifestyle.
